Things that make me get much angrier than I should because they don’t really matter that much, part 1
Self-service checkouts in supermarkets.
They’re loud. They’re annoying (what if I don’t want to place the item in the bagging area? Why do you have to keep telling me in that tone of voice that suggests I am some kind of imbecile for not placing it there?). They really aren’t much quicker than regular checkouts, especially when something fails to scan properly and you have to call over the member of staff standing nearby (who could, of course, be doing all this much more quickly and efficiently for you if only the supermarket would stick him/her behind a regular checkout). And most of all, they’re impersonal. Sure, I’m not saying I always strike up an in-depth conversation with every cashier who serves me, but I don’t want to end up in a world where machines are doing all the jobs humans used to do, but doing them far worse than humans did them, except that the machines are cheaper than the humans so we should all put up with shoddy service in exchange for saving 20p here and there.
Apart from that, I love them.
